Removing and Preventing the Automatic Reinstall of Internet Explorer 10

To remove IE 10

Control Panel –> Uninstall a Program –> View Installed Updates

IE 10 Uninstall

Right click on the Windows Internet Explorer 10 entry then left click on the uninstall option that appears.

A reboot will be required to complete the removal of IE 10.  After the reboot IE 9 should be available.  In some cases the system may roll back to IE 8.  In that case, run Windows Update to reinstall IE 9 and all related patches.

Prevent the automatic reinstall of IE 10

Microsoft has released the Internet Explorer 10 Installation Blocker Toolkit.  This tool will prevent the automatic installation of Internet Explorer 10.  The toolkit can be downloaded here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36512

  1. Download and Run IE10_BlockerToolkit.EXE. Specify a location for the files.
  2. Open a command prompt with administrative privileges.  Right click on Command Prompt in Accessories and select Run As Administrator.  Change to the directory that contains the toolkit.
  3. Type IE10_Blocker.cmd /b at the command prompt.  A confirmation will display indicating whether or not the command completed successfully.

The block can be disabled by entering IE10_Blocker.cmd /u at a command prompt.

A PC can still be manually updated to IE 10 even with the block enabled.
