How to Create an App Specific Password for AT&T Email

June 27, 2021

AT&T now requires more secure passwords for email clients. Your normal AT&T email password will still work when accessing AT&T webmail.

Go to att.com and click on Account in the upper right corner of the screen.

Left click Sign in on the menu that appears.

Enter your AT&T username and password on the screen that appears.

Click the Profile icon at the top of the screen.

Scroll down until you see Manage secure mail key.

Click Add secure mail key.

Assign a nickname to the secure email key.  I would recommend the name of the application where the key will be used.

Once the nickname is assigned, click the Create secure mail key button.

Click Copy secure email key to clipboard.  This will make it easier to paste the long string of characters into your email program.

A confirmation message will be displayed indicating the secure email key was successfully created.

You can now paste the secure email key into your email application.

You can also click the garbage can icon to delete any obsolete email keys.

Windows 10 – Not the Last Version of Windows After All

June 27, 2021

When Windows 10 was released someone within Microsoft made the statement that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows.  This statement was picked up by the media and has been taken as fact ever since.  On June 24th, 2021 Microsoft announced Windows 11.  Windows 11 should be available as a free download in early 2022, assuming your PC meets the requirements for Windows 11.  A PC from 2017 or later should meet the requirements.  Microsoft has a program that will check your PC for compatibility with Windows 11, which you can download from here: https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp.  A more comprehensive tool, Why Not Win 11, that provides more specific information concerning compatibility is available on GitHub here.

If your PC is not Windows 11 compatible, it will not be an issue until October 2025.  This is when support and security updates for Windows 10 will end.  Realistically, if your PC is more than three years old now, it will be time to upgrade to a new PC when support for Windows 10 ends in 2025.

A free Microsoft account will be required to login to Windows 11 Home, it will not be required on Windows 11 Pro.  If you upgrade from Windows 10, you will be upgraded to the same version in Windows 11.  I.e. Windows 10 Home will upgrade to Windows 11 Home.  Most users of Windows 10 will have the Home version, unless they specifically requested the Pro version from their PC manufacturer.

With the initial release of Windows 11 most of the changes are cosmetic.  You can see many of these changes on the Windows 11 website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/win

Is Windows 11 a must have at this point?  Not in my opinion.  It will most likely be a natural transition from aging hardware to something current.
